Epic Self-Care - My first 10k run

This week I am introducing my first instalment of 'Epic self-care'. It’s an area that I have placed more and more importance on over the last few years and I feel that I am really starting to reap the benefits of.

What is self-care? Easy, it's when you take care of yourself. But this is an area that is so often forgotten or placed at the bottom of the pile of 'jobs' to do. Unfortunately, people feel guilty to set time aside for themselves, especially when they have busy schedules. But this is when you should be even more diligent about self-care.

Running has been one area that I wanted to focus on and just last weekend, I ran my first 10K. It took me a few months to feel confident that this was a distance that I could run. I started with running for a minute and walking for a minute and slowly built up my stamina to run for longer periods. I had many struggles initially and definitely came up with excuses not to run.

Living in Germany and being winter time, it was always easy to say the weather is too cold or it's raining. But over time, I began to really enjoy running and it became something for me to look forward to. I have never been a runner, but I do enjoy nature and being outdoors so I made this my focus. Soon I was noticing different sides of nature each time I ran. Squirrels running up trees, deer running through the forest, sunrises and sunsets, etc.

I began to change my outlook on this activity and started to look forward to running and not seeing it as a chore. Now I make time to run every other day and hope to increase my running distance over the coming months and push myself further. Sure, there are still days where I don't feel like running, but I know that and how I will benefit from it.
